A two minute job that keeps the cheaper renewal available: set a reminder ninety days before your card expires, and put the right details in it.

The most expensive mistake in this trade costs about two minutes to avoid. Someone books the full course at full price because their card ran out six weeks ago, and the only reason it ran out is that nobody was watching the date. The short renewal was available the whole time, and then it was not.

So do the boring thing now. Open the calendar on your phone, find the end date on your card, count back ninety days, and put a reminder there. Give it a title you will still understand in two years. Then forget about it and let the phone carry it for you.
Ninety is not a superstitious number. It is roughly the runway this needs to stay easy instead of becoming a scramble. The reminder is not really about memory. It is about giving yourself enough room that one piece of ordinary bad luck does not cost you the cheaper option.
Why ninety days and not thirty
Courses do not run on demand. A class needs a date, a room, an instructor and enough people booked to go ahead, which means the calendar is built weeks out and the convenient dates go first. Thirty days of notice will usually find you something. It will not usually find you the Saturday you wanted, at the site nearest you, in a week you are not working away. That runway also absorbs the things that go wrong, and something usually does. You get sick on the morning. Work moves your shift. The class fills while you were still thinking about it. What to actually put in the reminder
A reminder that says 'first aid' will not help you. You will read it in two years, fail to place what it refers to, assume it is already handled, and dismiss it. Put the information inside the reminder itself, because your future self has no context and will not go looking for any.
Four things belong in it. The exact name of the certification as printed on your card, because the level matters and people misremember it upward. The real end date, written into the note rather than implied by where the reminder sits. Where you took it last time. And, if your card shows a separate component date, that earlier date as well, because it is the one that closes first.
Set the reminder to repeat if your calendar allows it. If it does not, set the next one on the day you finish the next course, while the new card is in your hand and the date is in front of you. The habit worth building is not remembering to renew. It is setting the reminder at the moment you are holding the evidence.
What to do when it goes off
Do not snooze it. Ninety days feels like plenty, and that feeling is precisely what turns ninety days into three weeks. When the reminder fires, book the class in the same sitting, even if the date you choose is two months away. A booked date can be moved. An intention cannot.
Check what you are actually renewing while you are in there. People book the level they think they hold and discover on arrival that they hold something else, usually because a job title changed or a previous employer paid for a level nobody explained to them at the time. The name printed on the card is the name that governs the booking, not the name in your head.
