Frequently Asked Questions
-
Usually, no. Advanced First Aid recertification is intended for students who currently hold an eligible, non-expired Advanced First Aid certificate.
If your certificate has expired, contact the Canadian Red Cross directly through their 1-800 support line to ask whether an extension is possible. Delta Emergency cannot approve certificate extensions. In some cases, the Red Cross may consider an extension if you can show that you are registered in a specific recertification course within a specific timeline. If the Red Cross does not approve an extension, you may need to complete the full Advanced First Aid course again.
-
Advanced First Aid recertification issues the same Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid certificate as the full course. Advanced First Aid is valid for 3 years.
Basic Life Support is included; the BLS certificate is valid for 1 year. This is the standard BLS certification period and is separate from the 3-year Advanced First Aid certification period.
-
There is no mandatory Canadian Red Cross blended online learning component for Advanced First Aid Recertification. The recertification course is delivered in person.
Delta Emergency may provide online review materials to help you prepare. These modules are not a substitute for class attendance and may not be mandatory under the Red Cross course structure, but they are strongly recommended, especially if you have not used your Advanced First Aid skills recently.
-
Review the online preparation package provided by Delta Emergency. This may include the Patient Assessment Model, assessment flow, BLS concepts, oxygen therapy, airway management, trauma care, medical emergencies, and scenario preparation.
This is a 40-hour recertification course. It is not designed to reteach the full Advanced First Aid program from zero. Students who arrive without reviewing may struggle with the pace, patient assessment, skills, and scenarios.
-
Yes, if the employer, school, fire department, or application pathway requires current Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid and/or Basic Life Support.
The certificates issued are regular Canadian Red Cross certificates. They are not proprietary Delta Emergency certificates and they do not say “recertification” as a lesser credential. Students who successfully complete the course receive standard Canadian Red Cross certification for the level completed.
-
Yes. If you successfully complete Advanced First Aid Recertification and receive a current Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid certificate, you may be eligible to register for the AFA to EMR Bridge.
You should still review the bridge requirements before registering. The AFA to EMR Bridge is not a beginner course and assumes you can already perform Advanced First Aid-level assessment, skills, and scenarios without basic retraining.
-
Yes, if you still hold a valid Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid certificate and meet the bridge prerequisite, you may choose to take the AFA to EMR Bridge instead of renewing Advanced First Aid first.
That said, students who completed Advanced First Aid through another agency and wait until the end of their 3-year certification period often struggle with the bridge, even if they have taken AFA more than once before. The bridge is a focused EMR-level course with a significant jump in content, skills, patient assessment, and testing expectations. Delta Emergency strongly recommends taking the AFA to EMR Bridge within 1 year of your current Advanced First Aid issue date whenever possible.
Registration Policies
Students must hold a current, eligible certificate, and must attend and participate in the required course components and successfully complete the required evaluations to receive certification.
Course transfers, cancellations, refunds, and attendance requirements are governed by Delta Emergency's Registration Policies.
