What does a class day look like?

Three weekdays in a row, 9:00 to 5:00, with breaks. That is a full teaching day each time, which is how the course fits into three days instead of spreading across four. The total hours and the fee are in the course details above, and the dates are still being set.

My certificate expired last month. Can I still recertify?

No. The Canadian Red Cross only allows recertification for a certificate that is still valid on the day of the course. Once it has expired, the way back is the full First Responder course. If you are not sure of your date, send us your certificate and we will check it.

Do I get Basic Life Support with it?

Yes. BLS is included and issues its own certificate, valid one year, on its own clock inside the three-year First Responder certificate.

What counts as a baby, a child or an adult, and which ages does this course cover?

This course carries BLS (Basic Life Support), which covers adults, children, infants and neonates. The Canadian Red Cross 2025 standards set the age groups this way. A baby is under 1 year old. A child is 1 year old up to the onset of puberty. An adult is anyone from the onset of puberty on. Puberty does not happen on a set birthday, so you judge it on the person in front of you. A 13 year old who has started puberty gets adult CPR, and one who has not is still a child. For an AED, use child pads on a child up to the onset of puberty or under 55 pounds (about 25 kg), and baby pads on a baby if the AED has them. If baby pads are not there, use child or adult pads. If child pads are not there, use adult pads. The Red Cross says adult pads are safe on a child or a baby, so do not wait for the right size. If you are training for a specific person, tell us their age and we will tell you which course fits.

Is live translation available for this course?

No. This course is taught and assessed in English, without live classroom translation. You need to understand instructions, communicate during practical scenarios and complete the assessments in English. Contact us before registering if you have questions.

A renewal, not the course over again

Everyone in the room has done this before, and that is the premise the whole three days rests on. You are not being introduced to patient assessment. You are being watched doing it, corrected where it has drifted, and brought up to date where the standards have moved since you last sat the course. The hours are shorter because the starting point is higher, not because less is expected of you.

Everything is still assessed. A recertification that waved people through would be worth nothing to the employer reading the certificate, and the Canadian Red Cross sets what has to be demonstrated before one is issued. Coming in rusty is normal and is the reason to book. Coming in expecting a formality is not.

Your expiry date decides which course you can take

Your expiry date determines your eligibility. Recertification is only available while your certificate is still valid on the day of the course. Once it has expired, you need the full course, at a higher cost and with twice the classroom time. Check your expiry date and book before it.

If you are not sure of your date, send us your certificate before you book. We would rather check it with you than have you book the wrong course.

What the 20 hours cover

The First Responder skill set, run as a renewal: patient assessment and history taking, airway and breathing management, oxygen and ventilation, bleeding control and shock, spinal motion considerations, and the scenario work that puts all of it together while a clock runs.

Basic Life Support is included and issues its own certificate on its own one year clock, sitting inside the three year First Responder certificate. That is two dates to track rather than one, and the shorter one is the one people forget.

Three days, nine to five, breaks included. It is a working schedule rather than a gentle one, which is what fitting a renewal into three days actually means.

What letting it lapse costs you

The full First Responder course is 40 hours against this one's 20, and it costs more to sit. That arithmetic is the only reason this page keeps pointing you at your expiry date instead of at a booking button.

There is no penalty for asking too early. There is a real one for asking too late, and it is paid in both money and days off work.

What the renewed certificate is

A Canadian Red Cross First Responder certificate, valid three years, with the Basic Life Support component valid one year. Delta issues it as a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner.

What that certificate is worth to a particular employer, school or regulator is their decision rather than ours. If you are renewing because a specific body asked you to, send us the exact wording they gave you, unedited, and we will tell you honestly whether this is the course that answers it, including telling you when only they can settle it.

Dates are still being set

This one is new to the public calendar. The hours and the fee are settled and shown above; the dates are not yet. Tell us you are interested and we will come back with them, and we will check that your certificate will still be valid on the class date at the same time, so you are not holding a seat on the wrong course.

This course is taught and assessed in English. Professional responder training involves extensive medical terminology, clinical abbreviations, patient assessment, rapid communication, and complex practical scenarios.

Live classroom translation is not offered for this program.

Students must be able to understand instructions, communicate effectively during practical scenarios, and complete the required assessments in English.
