Welcome to the Responder Skills Refresher Course! This course is specifically designed for First Responders, Advanced First Aiders, and Emergency Medical Responders who are looking to refresh their skills in emergency medical equipment, scenarios, traumatic injuries, medical complaints, and essential skills. Whether you are preparing for your new recruit class with Calgary Fire or Edmonton Fire, or simply looking to stay updated and proficient in your emergency response abilities, this course will provide you with the knowledge and practice you need to be successful in the field.

Course Objectives:
Review and practice the use of emergency medical equipment, including but not limited to, Vital sign equipment, Suction devices, OPA, NPA, Resuscitation mask, Assisted Ventilations, NC, NRB, BVM, Hemorrhage control, Spinal Motion Restriction devices, Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), splints, medication, and trauma kits.
Enhance proficiency in assessing and managing medical and traumatic emergencies through realistic scenarios, including cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, head injuries, severe bleeding, fractures, diabetes, seizures and more.
Develop effective communication and teamwork skills in high-stress situations, including effective handover reports, clear radio communication (if requested), and coordinated response strategies (MCI review).
Review and practice basic and basic life support skills, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), airway management, and use of medications and interventions within your scope of practice.
Stay updated with the latest guidelines and protocols for emergency care, including changes in techniques, equipment, and best practices.
Course Content:
Emergency Medical Equipment Skills:
Proper and safe use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for cardiac arrest management.
Utilizing bag-valve masks and airway adjuncts for effective ventilation and airway management.
Application of splints and immobilization techniques for fractures and sprains.
Familiarization with trauma kits and their contents for effective bleeding control and wound management.
2. Realistic Scenarios:
Simulated scenarios of medical and traumatic emergencies to practice critical thinking and decision-making skills in high-stress situations.
Application of learned skills in realistic scenarios, including cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, anaphylaxis, and traumatic injuries.
Debriefing and feedback sessions to identify areas of improvement and reinforce best practices.
3. Communication and Teamwork Skills:
Effective communication strategies, including handover reports, radio communication, and coordinating with other responders and agencies.
Teamwork and leadership skills in the dynamic and high-pressure environment of emergency response.
Role-playing exercises to practice communication and teamwork skills in realistic scenarios.
4. Basic and Advanced Life Support Skills:
Review of CPR techniques, including chest compressions, rescue breaths, and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
Airway management techniques, including assessment, opening and maintaining airway, and use of airway adjuncts.
Medication administration and interventions within the scope of practice, including epinephrine, naloxone, aspirin, and more.
Case-based discussions and hands-on practice to reinforce basic and advanced life support skills.
5. Guidelines and Protocols:
Review of current guidelines and protocols for emergency care, including updates on techniques, equipment, and best practices.
Discussion of evidence-based guidelines and their application in real-world emergency situations.
Stay updated with the latest advancements and recommendations in emergency medical care.
Course Delivery:
The Responder Skills Refresher Course will be delivered through a combination of mini-lectures, hands-on skill stations, simulations, role-playing exercises, and case-based discussions. Trained instructors with extensive experience in emergency medical care will facilitate the course and provide guidance, feedback, and support throughout the training. The course can be tailored to the specific needs and requirements of the participants, taking into consideration their level of expertise, prior training, and scope of practice.
The Responder Skills Refresher Course is delivered by experienced instructors who are full-time EMS professionals with years of experience as EMR's, PCP's, and ACP's. Some instructors also hold the Critical Care Flight Paramedic designation, bringing a wealth of practical knowledge and expertise to the training. The course can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the participants, ensuring that they receive the highest quality training from instructors with real-world experience in emergency medical response.
With its comprehensive content and practical approach, this course will help First Responders, Advanced First Aiders, and Emergency Medical Responders stay refreshed and proficient in their skills, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle emergency situations effectively and with confidence.
Whether you’ve trained with Delta Emergency or not, this skills refresher course will prepare you for Edmonton Fire and Calgary Fire. Past students taking AFA with Delta Emergency have been hired with Edmonton/Calgary Fire departments.
