Course Overview

The FR to AFA Bridge is designed for students who already hold Canadian Red Cross First Responder and want to complete Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid certification.

This course builds on First Responder. It is not designed to reteach basic first aid, CPR, patient assessment fundamentals, or core First Responder skills from the beginning.

First Responder and Advanced First Aid share a large amount of content. The Bridge focuses on the training required to complete Advanced First Aid certification for students who already hold First Responder, rather than repeating material both courses have in common.

Students should expect a focused bridge course with professional responder content, patient assessment, emergency care, practical skill development, scenario work, participation, and evaluations.

Delta Emergency's FR to AFA Bridge includes Basic Life Support. Successful students receive both Canadian Red Cross Advanced First Aid and Basic Life Support certification.

What Advanced First Aid Is, and What to Confirm

Advanced First Aid and First Responder are both recognized Canadian Red Cross certifications, but they are named and used differently by employers, worksites, and industries.

Some employers, worksites, and industrial contracts specifically require Advanced First Aid by name. If you hold First Responder but your workplace, contract, or regulator asks for Advanced First Aid, this Bridge lets you complete the Advanced First Aid certificate without repeating your full First Responder training.

Neither Advanced First Aid nor First Responder is the same thing as Alberta College of Paramedics registration. If your goal is to become a registered EMR in Alberta, write provincial exams, or apply for an Alberta EMR practice permit, that is controlled by the Alberta College of Paramedics and follows a separate approved pathway. Confirm the current Alberta College-approved pathway before registering for any course intended for that purpose.

Other provinces, employers, schools, and industries may treat these certifications differently. If you are using this course outside Alberta, confirm the requirement with the province, employer, school, or organization you are applying to.

Use this order before registering:

  1. Choose your goal

  2. Choose your target employer, worksite, school, fire department, regulator, or province

  3. Confirm the exact prerequisite

  4. Register for the course that matches that requirement

If you are still confirming which certification fits your goal, our guide to choosing the right responder course for your destination breaks down what employers, PCP schools, fire departments, and Alberta EMR registration each require, so you can be sure the Bridge is the right step before you register.
